Arti et Amicitiae presenteert met trots de groepstentoonstelling What My Hands Know, met nieuw en bestaand werk van twaalf internationale en Nederlandse kunstenaars.
De tentoonstelling richt zich op kunstenaarspraktijken waarin materialiteit, intuïtie en een procesmatige manier van werken centraal staan. De titel verwijst naar onze interesse in belichaamde kennis en naar handen als instrumenten en overbrengers van informatie tussen de binnen- en buitenwereld. In een steeds meer digitale wereld is onze dagelijkse realiteit vaak nogal afstandelijk, en worden fysieke lichamen vaak eerder gezien als obstakels dan als dragers van kennis. In deze tentoonstelling worden toeschouwers uitgenodigd opnieuw contact te maken met hun zintuigen en om de tactiele, materiële en fysieke aanwezigheid van de kunstwerken te verkennen.
De tentoonstelling omvat installatie, sculptuur en objecten in de breedste zin van het woord: gebruikmakend van een veelheid aan materialen zoals textiel, klei, aluminium, bewegend beeld, huishoudelijke voorwerpen, nagellak, geluid, latex, bouwmaterialen, medische apparatuur, voedsel en 3-D scans, werken de kunstenaars in een reeks van zowel meer traditionele als nieuwe technieken zoals weven, keramiek, tekenen, bewerken, gieten, lasersnijden en assemblage. Elke kunstenaar presenteert een uniek perspectief op het creatieve proces, waarin intuïtie, experiment, transformatie en een constante dialoog met materialen de drijvende kracht is. De selectie van werken verkent een breed scala aan zowel persoonlijke als actuele, universele thema’s, gerelateerd aan de relatie en interacties tussen het lichaam en zijn innerlijke/uiterlijke omgeving.
Een essay van Fenne Saedt (curator en artistiek directeur Ruis in Nijmegen) begeleidt de tentoonstelling.
What My Hands Know is een project van kunstenaars Sara Bjarland en Charlotte Eta Mumm. De tentoonstelling wordt genereus ondersteund door het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst en de Iona Stichting. Individuele kunstenaars kregen ook steun van het Constant van Renessefonds, Mondriaan Fonds, de State Culture Capital Foundation (SCCF) of Latvia, Amarte Fonds, Stichting Stokroos en The Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.

The exhibition focuses on artist practices where materiality, intuition and a process-driven way of working are central. The title refers to our interest in embodied knowledge and to hands as tools and transmitters of information between the inner and the outer world. In an increasingly digital world, our daily reality is often quite disembodied, and physical bodies are often viewed as obstacles rather than as carriers of knowledge. In this exhibition, viewers are invited to reconnect with their senses and to explore the tactile, material, and physical presence of the artworks. The exhibition comprises installation, sculpture and objects the broadest sense of the word: using a multitude of materials like textile, clay, aluminium, moving image, household objects, nail varnish, sound, latex, building materials, medical equipment, food and 3-D scans, the artists work across a range of both more traditional and new techniques like weaving, ceramics, drawing, editing, casting, laser cutting and assemblage. Each artist presents a unique perspective on the creative process, in which intuition, experimentation, transformation and a constant dialogue with materials is the driving force. The selection of works explore a broad range of both personal and current, universal themes, related to the relationship and interactions between the body and its inner/outer surroundings.
