denken over ruimte, leegte, restvorm en vorm
Als voorbereiding op onze duo tentoonstelling in Galerie Abstract Project in Parijs maken we een gezamenlijke presentatie van ons werk in de Artspace van Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. We hebben elkaar leren kennen door de reizende tentoonstelling “Contemporary Contemplations” die in 2018 voor het eerst te zien was in de bovenzalen van Arti. Een goede reden voor een come back in Arti!
Ons werk heeft meerdere verwantschappen: het is minimalistisch, zowel constructief als deconstructief, ordening speelt een grote rol. Denken over begrippen als ‘de restvorm’ of de tussenruimte, of in het Engels: residual form of negative space, geeft aanleiding om datgene zichtbaar te maken of te markeren, wat doorgaans als lucht, leegte of witruimte wordt gezien. Hierbij gaat Gerda uit van het raster en gebruikt Gracia letters en woorden als ordeningsprincipe. Daarnaast hebben we beide dezelfde initialen.
In deze presentatie toont Gracia Khouw werk uit de ERtussendoor serie. Op de panelen springen de geschilderde vormen in het oog. De vormen van de letters zijn blank gelaten; je ziet de nerf van het hout als een toevallige tekening door de vormen heen. Khouw heeft woorden die de onderlinge relaties aangeven tussen objecten, of tussen mens en object, als uitgangspunt genomen: ertussendoor, eroverheen en ervandoor. Ook is werk te zien uit Five Four, More Less serie; een verzameling van vierletterwoorden die het iconisch werk van Robert Indiana uit 1966 als inspiratiebron hebben (prints op plexiglas).
Gerda Kruimer toont werk uit haar 3D Soft Grids serie. De werken zijn een poging om een ‘niet-hiërarchische’ ruimte te creëren door middel van een identiek raster.
Daarnaast is werk te zien uit de PUNATICS serie. De titel van deze werken is een verwijzing naar een klein stukje abstracte wereld in het midden van de Stille Oceaan waar mensen zijn begonnen met het bouwen van huizen op een zwarte lavavlakte. Deze werken zijn variaties op een type, teruggebracht tot de essentie. Uiteindelijk verwijzen de kunstwerken naar niets anders dan naar zichzelf.

The distance between two intersecting lines
Works about space, emptiness, residual form and shape
In preparation for our duo exhibition at Galerie Abstract Project in Paris, we are collaborating on a presentation of our work at the Artspace of Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. We have come to know each other through the traveling exhibition “Contemporary Contemplations” which was first shown in the upper rooms of Arti in 2018. A good reason for a comeback at Arti! Our work has several kinships: they are minimalist, both constructive and deconstructive, and organisation plays a big role. About notions such as ’the residual form’ or ‘in-between space’, or ‘negative space’, gives rise to visualizing or marking what is usually seen as air, emptiness or white space. In this process, Gerda takes the grid as her starting point and Gracia uses letters and words as her organizing principle. In addition, we both have the same initials.
In this presentation Gracia Khouw shows work from the ERtussendoor series. On the panels, the painted shapes stand out. The shapes of the letters are left blank; you can see the grain of the wood as a random drawing through the shapes. Khouw has taken Dutch words that indicate the mutual relationships between objects, or between man and object, as a starting point: ertussendoor, eroverheen, ervandoor. Also on view are works from Five Four, More Less series; a collection of four-letter words inspired by Robert Indiana’s iconic 1966 ‘LOVE’ painting.
Gerda Kruimer will show work from her 3D Soft Grids series. The works are an attempt to create a “non-hierarchical” space through an identical grid. Also on display is work from the PUNATICS series. The title of these works is a reference to a small piece of abstract world in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where people have started building houses on a black lava plain. These paintings are variations on a type, reduced to its essence. Ultimately, the artworks refer to nothing but themselves.
