Paul Goede – Séances
Vanuit zijn intensieve studie van verschillende conceptuele benaderingen uit de jaren 1970 en in het bijzonder van de Japanse conceptuele kunstenaars Yutaka Matsuzawa en On Kawara, heeft Paul Goede zijn eigen conceptuele vorm van séances ontwikkeld. Ze zijn elk gewijd aan een kleur, een nummer en ondertussen vooral een letter.

Bij het ontwikkelen van het respectievelijke concept is de eerste stap… een letter en de daarmee verbonden woorden te analyseren en te deconditioneren. Dit proces wordt op zijn beurt geabstraheerd, vergeestelijkt en psychisch geladen, om het in de séance in sterk gecondenseerde vorm te intoneren. Een gecondenseerde vorm als een ‘akoestische sculptuur'(hoog, laag, stil, luid, stil, enz.), en het telkens te variëren in atmosferisch overgebrachte uitwisseling met het publiek.

Het gaat hem er niet in de laatste plaats om de ervaring mogelijk te maken van wat onzichtbaar helpt de dingen vorm te geven op geestelijk, psychologisch en cultureel niveau. Zo zijn de Mental Séances cijfers in de zin van de… filosoof en psychoanalyticus Karl Jaspers, die hun essentiële kwaliteit zag in het overbrengen van ervaringen…van gedachten voor iets dat niet materieel kan worden begrepen.

Paul Goede has contributed to the exhibition with his séances over three long weekends. From hisintensive study of various conceptual approaches of the 1970s and especially with the Japanese conceptual artists Yutaka Matsuzawa and On Kawara, he has developed his own conceptual kind of performances without action with the Mental Séances. They are each dedicated to a color, a number and, in the meantime, above all, a letter. In developing the respective concept, the first step is to analyze and decondition a letter and the words associated with it. This process is in turn to be abstracted, spiritualized and psychically charged, in order to intonate it in the séance in highly condensed form as an ‘acoustic sculpture’ (high, low, quiet, loud, still, etc.), and to vary it in each case in atmospherically transmitted exchange with the audience. He is not least concerned with making it possible to experience what invisibly helps to shape things on a spiritual, psychological, cultural level. Thus the Mental Séances are ciphers in the sense of the philosopher and psychoanalyst Karl Jaspers, who saw their essential quality in conveying experiences of thought for something that cannot be materially grasped.
